Camp Towles is located in a beautiful secluded valley along the Tygart River. It provides picturesque scenery, closeness to nature, and peacefulness to all who visit. There is a two story dinning/assembly hall with a large fully equipped kitchen for food preparation and a dining
hall that will accommodate up to 100. There are
six (6) cabins available with sleeping
accommodations for 130. There is a large shower
house with restroom facilities, a pavilion, a football
size play field, a pond for fishing, access to the
Tygart River for canoeing and fishing, and wooded
areas for hiking and nature walking. Activities
occur year round but the one of most pride is the
annual 4-H camp provided every June. Through
the largess of community grants and the Taylor
County Board of Education the facility is kept in
pristine condition so that many can enjoy its beauty.
Much has been done over the years to maintain
and improve the site for optimum accessibility by
school groups and the public.
The site was willed to Taylor County Schools by Ralph Towles in 1938 and additional acreage willed by B.J. Hill in 1981.
Private citizens and community groups may rent the facility for retreats, weddings, reunions, and social gatherings. Those interested in utilizing Camp Towles can contact the Taylor County Extension Office at 304-265-3303.
